What is Mindfulness?

In today's busy and fast-paced world, most of us are moving on automatic pilot trying to get everything done on our ever-changing to-do list.  Mindfulness is a practice that is growing in popularity across North America, but what exactly does it mean and how can it make our lives better?

Mindfulness is defined as moment to moment, non-judgemental awareness.  In other words, knowing what we are doing as we are doing it with our full attention.  It teaches us how to be more “mindful” or “aware” of our thoughts, feelings and actions in the present moment without judgement.  It helps us to be more accepting of anything life throws our way.

The benefits of practicing mindfulness include:

1.      Decreased stress

2.     Improved communication and conflict resolution skills

3.     Increased empathy and understanding

4.     Improved immune system and overall health

5.     Greater job satisfaction and positive outlook

6.     Increased attention and focus

We can practice mindfulness from the moment we wake in the morning until we close our eyes at night. It can be done anywhere, anytime in countless situations throughout the day.
